5 Big Sky Winter Activities Not To Miss (That Aren’t Skiing)

When Big Sky Montana comes up in conversation, the topic of skiing often takes center stage. And rightfully so, Big Sky does boast having “the biggest skiing in America”. But at the risk of stating the obvious, there are many other winter activities in Big Sky not to be overlooked. Other world class outdoor opportunities are available just minutes beyond Big Sky Town Center. Continue reading for our list of Big Sky activities not to be missed:

Spend A Day At Lone Mountain Ranch

More than a deluxe lodging experience, Lone Mountain Ranch offers a host of unique, seasonal experiences on the ranch. You can spend a day dog-sledding with Alaskan huskies, try nordic skiing on their 50+ miles of world-class trails (voted #1 by Cross Country Skier magazine) or take a moonlit snowshoe tour. Flyfishers too can spend a day with one of their guides and access fishing by wade or snowshoe. Be guided to the perfect casting spot on a Montana blue-ribbon stream from December to March.

Add More Thrill With A Yellowstone Snowmobile Tour

Passage through the west entrance of Yellowstone is only accessible by snowmobile or snowcoach in the winter time, meaning you get a special experience in the park shared with very few other souls. You can access Old Faithful, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, the Lower Geyser Basin, and Firehole Canyon with many of the different tour companies operating out of the west entrance. From there, travel by ski or snowshoe in any direction. Bring your camera and take your best photos yet.

Get Inspired At The Warren Miller Performing Arts Center

A world-class entertainment center featuring local talent alongside international exhibitions of dance, music, and theater. The WMPAC has events year-round, hosting different artists or performance groups during the summer. The center is also home to other Big Sky community theaters and is shared with Ophir School students by day. They are in operation this winter, though in house seats are limited to 25% capacity, online viewings also available!

Skate + Shop In Big Sky Town Center

Lace up your skates and hit the ice in the Town Center because open skating is offered everyday! The rink is generally open from mid-December until mid-March, with broomball, curling and kid’s hockey clinics on select days too.

Nearby you can browse locally owned boutiques and art galleries amongst the many unique shops in the Big Sky Town Center. Take a break after for a beer at Beehive Brewing, and yes your pup can come too.

Treat Yourself & Dine At Big Sky Restaurants

Big Sky’s food scene is excellent, and growing quite fast! Fill up on ramen, whiskey, sushi and more right in Big Sky Town Center. For fine dining, Horn & Cantle is at the top of the list for many (read: elk bolognese and beignets). Craving barbecue after a day on the snow? Stop at the Gallatin Riverhouse off of 191 for a rack of ribs and all the fixins’.

If you seek a truly memorable experience, book a trip to the Montana Dinner Yurt. Get escorted via snowcat from the Big Sky Mountain Village to a backcountry, toasty warm yurt under Lone Peak. On the menu is a three-course meal with tender filet mignon or wild alaskan salmon (oh and BYO beer or wine!).

Whether you’re just passing through the Gallatin Canyon, or spending your winter vacation in Big Sky, venture out and explore more than the slopes! If you have yet to be convinced, visit the Big Sky blog for even more things to do in the area, all year round.
